A new study has shown mental health and well-being can be boosted by spending just five minutes exercising in a green space such as a park.
The research, carried out at the University of Essex, found that exercise such as walking or cycling with nature can have a dramatic impact on well-being.
The study, published in the Environmental Science and Technology journal, showed just five minutes outdoors can boost self-esteem and improve moods.
And it is claimed young people benefit the most from exercise while surrounded by nature.
Data from 10 studies involving 1,250 people was used in the latest report, while researchers assessed the impact of a number of different methods of exercising, including walking, gardening, horse-riding, boating, and fishing.
The biggest impact on mental health was noted in the first five minutes, but researchers said the positive effects of exercising for longer were clearly apparent.
Jules Pretty, who led the study, said people who are stressed, generally inactive, or suffer with a mental illness, would benefit most from taking part in “green exercise,” even if it was just for short while every day.
