A former Olympic athlete is hoping to create “Britain’s most beautiful marathon”.
Steve Cram has chosen his favourite place to go running – Kielder Water in Northumberland – as the location for his new marathon.
The 1983 world champion at 1500m said he hoped the Kielder Marathon would become the country’s “most beautiful marathon”.
Organisers hope to attract runners and outdoor adventure enthusiasts from around the world to take part in the race around the newly completed Lakeside Way. A maximum of 1,000 competitors can enter the inaugural event on October 17.
Cram, who is set to commentate on the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, said: “Most of the course is off-road and it offers a wonderful test for trail runners, adventure racers and marathon enthusiasts alike.
“Add to that the stunning setting, with a wonderful new view at every twist and turn, and I think that this is quickly going to establish a reputation as the most beautiful marathon in Britain.”
