New Year’s Resolutions: How To Get Fit and Stay Fit All Year Long

New Years ResolutionWith the dawning of a New Year, many a New Year’s resolutions pertain to getting fit, dropping pounds, and earning that body you’ve always dreamed of. While 1st January is a great time to wipe the slate clean and a time for new beginnings, the sad truth is that most New Year’s resolutions fall flat by Valentines Day. People are often overzealous their first two or three bouts in the gym, but once the novelty wears off and the sore muscles set in they aren’t as inclined to keep their pledges to themselves for a fitter and more healthy lifestyle.

Yet that doesn’t have to be the case every time, and with a few tips you can find yourself in stellar shape and motivated for not only the rest of the year but for the rest of your life. Fitness and a healthy lifestyle is more than a means to look great in a bikini or the latest fashions and is something you should be doing for a better you.

The first mistake that people make when starting a new fitness regime is setting their sights on something either unobtainable or a bit out of their reach. Instead of saying you what the body of Brad Pitt or Victoria Beckham, set your sights on a goal that is more concrete. Think about a particular event, such as a race or tournament, a specific amount of miles you want to be able to run, or a weight that you want to be able to lift. You are much more likely to remained dedicated to your cause if you can clearly see what you want to achieve.

Secondly think about getting fit as a journey. You don’t need only one goal that represents the climax of your endeavour, but a series of smaller ones. Think baby steps. If you have never run a step in your life, set a goal of completing one entire mile of continuous running. Start by doing a combination of walking and jogging and then build your way up. Then once you reach that goal, set your sights on another as you increase the distance. That way you will feel rewarded at having completed one goal and motivated to continue onward instead of discouraged at having not finished a marathon.

Finally enlist the help of your friends or get new ones. Fitness should be fun, don’t think of it like a chore or you’ll start to dread it. Try out a variety of new activities that you may never have done before and then find one that you enjoy the most. Join a new class that interests you where you will be surrounded by others who will push you and encourage you to come back for more.

If you start a running routine meet up with a local group or get a few of your friends to start with you. That way you will keep each other motivated and inspired when one or the others’ stamina or desire to get moving may be lagging. Your New Year’s resolution doesn’t need to fall flat, you just need to go about it the right way!
