Mature move’ to celebrate 100 years

100th BirthdayNinety-nine-year-old Georgina Easter from Derby is set to celebrate her 100th birthday later this month in the only way she knows how – with her weekly fix of aerobics.

The sprightly soon-to-be centenarian has no intention of slowing down the pace of her exercise regime when she turns 100 later this month – an attitude that is due to be celebrated at an Adult Learners Event organised by the local council.

Georgina, who celebrates her birthday on December 27, is a regular at the council’s weekly ‘Keep Fit for Mature Movers’ class where she builds up a sweat along with her fellow fitness fanatics.

“I go every week and I don’t like to miss a class – keeping active is important and I am not planning to stop just yet,” she said.

Derby City Council said the 99-year-old was an inspiration to other mature learners.

Ruth Skelton, cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “Our Adult Learning Service provides over 500 courses from basic skills to visual arts in the daytime and evening across the city with over 5000 people taking part each year.

“However, Georgina Easter is an example to everyone who thinks they are too old to learn or who thinks that being older means they can no longer keep active.”
