Cutting TV can help weight loss

TV RemoteA study has found that people who watch less television burn more calories as they are more likely to increase their physical activity.

In the experiment, the television viewing times of 20 volunteers were recorded over a week. Their TVs were then fitted with devices which automatically stopped them viewing more than half of the amount they previously watched. They also had their physical activity measured through an armband.

As a result, the volunteers burned an average of 244 more calories than they ate each day, thanks to an increase in activity.

Those whose television was not rationed consumed 57 more calories than they burned off, which would lead to weight gain.

While the study was only carried out on 36 people, the researchers argue that its findings highlight that activity and weight loss increase when television is cut down.

The researchers, led by Dr Jennifer Otten, from the University of Vermont, wrote: “It has been estimated that combined increases in energy expenditure and decreases in energy intake equalling only 100 calories per day could prevent the gradual weight gain observed in most of the population.”

The results of the study have been published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
